Author Diana Zimmerman visited Bayview last month to talk about her life, her book, Kandide and the Secret of the Mists and how important it is to believe in yourself to achieve your goals.  Mrs. Zimmerman began her program with a few magic tricks and told the students that there is "magic in believing" in the power of you.  Mrs. Zimmerman explained that she became an author later in life and was inspired by other authors such as J.K. Rowling.  Mrs. Zimmerman shared that when a book goes to a publicist, it is not always approved the first time.  Harry Potter , was rejected one hundred twenty-four times.  Being persistent is an important character trait, she told Bayview Students.

The children learned about the characters in Mrs. Zimmerman's book through role playing and audience participation.  Kenny, a fifth grader, had to growl like a wolf and Christina, a fourth grader, had to hiss and snarl like a garglan.  Several Students attended Mrs. Zimmerman's book signing at Barnes & Noble that evening.  Without a doubt, the children enjoyed Mrs. Zimmerman's visit and her presentation of her action-packed, fantasy-filled novel.

Kathleen,

Please pass along our thanks to Diana as well, the booksellers were raving about her and were disappointed when I let them know she was not local to Atlanta, but they will be excited to have her back.  I would also be happy to put in a good word for any of the stores to which she is local, if she doesn't already have a relationship with them.

Thanks again!

Maggie

"Author Diana Zimmerman's visit to FoxTale Book Shoppe was the key ingredient to a festive event especially for young readers.  Not only did we have lively discussion about the book, Kandide and the Secrets of the Mists, but a fairy party with crafts, prizes and costumes kept the kids talking about it for weeks."

Dear Kathleen,

Thank you for arranging to have Diana visit our school. The students thoroughly enjoyed her magic and storytelling. She led a discussion about how many people told her, “NO” in her life but that she was persistent and kept trying despite their negative messages. She told of how overtime she was able to make her dreams come true and overcome adversity. This message is one that the youth of the school desperately needed to hear and internalize.

Diana talked a bit about bullying and how the idea of forgiveness is so important in life. As the school counselor I have made sure that this discussion has not ended. In my work in the classrooms, the students are now working on character education based comic books. These books have many themes some of which are being honest, having courage to do the right thing, being reliable and being a good friend.

It was an honor and a joy to host Diana for a reading. Thank you so much for this opportunity.

Today, Diana S. Zimmerman visited our school to share her new book, Kandide and the Secret of the Mists.  Students were "wowed" by her magic trick and intriqued by the characters and plot of her book! Ms. Zimmerman's message regarding bullying was well received and inspirational for students!

Thank you so very much for arranging the visit with Diana Zimmerman to Palmer Lake Elementary. I’ve attached some photos of her presentation. She captured the students’ attention from the very start of her presentation with some magic tricks and kept their attention throughout by fully engaging them and even bringing them “up on stage” for active student participation. The magic books are still flying off the library shelves and her book is constantly being requested.  Thank you again, it was fantastic!
